Understanding Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), commonly referred to as autism, is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, communication, and behaviour. The term "spectrum" reflects the wide range of symptoms and severity across individuals.

Key Characteristics of Autism

  1. Social Interaction Difficulties:

    • Difficulty understanding and responding to social cues.

    • Challenges in developing and maintaining relationships.

    • Limited eye contact or unusual facial expressions.

  2. Communication Challenges:

    • Delayed speech and language development.

    • Trouble starting or maintaining conversations.

    • Use of repetitive or scripted speech.

  3. Repetitive Behaviours and Restricted Interests:

    • Repetitive movements (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking).

    • Strong preference for routines and resistance to change.

    • Intense interest in specific topics or activities.

  4. Sensory Sensitivities:

    • Over- or under-sensitivity to sensory stimuli such as lights, sounds, textures, or tastes.

    • Unusual responses to sensory experiences (e.g., covering ears to block out noise).
