Autism (ASD) Assessment
process for Adults

  • Our secure system will send you a series of questionnaires to complete, focusing on key areas such as your developmental history, personal history, social communication and interactions, as well as any routines, repetitive interests, or sensitivities you may experience. We will also ask you to provide details of someone who knows you well—such as a relative, partner, or close friend—so they can offer additional perspectives.

We understand that completing these forms may take some time, but they are essential for providing us with comprehensive and detailed information. This thorough understanding is crucial for ensuring an accurate diagnosis and personalised feedback. By gathering this information beforehand, our clinical team can review and analyse it carefully, allowing us to deliver a professional and effective assessment tailored to your needs.

  • At Neuro Wellbeing, we always use evidence-based approaches to deliver thorough and accurate assessments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our process incorporates the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), a gold-standard diagnostic tool for ASD. This structured assessment evaluates key areas such as social communication, interaction, and other behaviors relevant to an autism diagnosis. In addition, we may draw on elements of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), which gathers detailed developmental and behavioral information to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.

Prior to the ADOS-2 assessment, our clinicians will clarify key aspects of your developmental history based on the information provided in your completed forms. This allows us to ensure accuracy and address any gaps or ambiguities. Additionally, we will conduct a mental state examination to gain a broader understanding of your current emotional and psychological well-being.

Each assessment involves two clinicians to provide a collaborative and detailed approach. One clinician administers the ADOS-2 tasks and interactions, while the second clinician observes and records additional information. The session itself typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, with time allocated to accommodate your pace and allow for the sharing of additional insights.

All our ASD assessments are conducted online, offering numerous benefits. These include minimising changes to your routine, allowing you to participate in the comfort of your own sensory environment, reducing the communication demands of in-person interactions, and eliminating the need for travel. If accessing the online session presents any challenges, we are here to provide guidance and support to help you feel comfortable and prepared. This comprehensive, patient-centered approach ensures a professional and reliable assessment experience.

  • A multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting is a collaborative discussion where all the clinicians involved in your assessment come together to review and evaluate the information gathered during the process. The team carefully applies the DSM-5 criteria for autism spectrum disorder to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to meet the diagnostic threshold for ASD. In some cases, the clinicians may request additional information from you to clarify certain aspects and help them reach a well-informed outcome.

  • Following the MDT meeting, the clinicians will reach a consensus on the most appropriate outcome based on all the information and evidence gathered throughout the assessment process. A clinician will then arrange a phone or video appointment with you to share the outcome, provide a summary of the overall assessment, and offer recommendations for strategies or interventions that may be helpful. A comprehensive and detailed assessment report will be sent to you within two weeks of this feedback appointment.

  • At Neuro Wellbeing, we are a dedicated, experienced nurse-led team with access to consultant expertise, specialising in the assessment and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Using evidence-based tools such as the ADOS-2 and adhering to the DSM-5-TR criteria, we deliver thorough and professional assessments tailored to each individual’s needs. The vast majority of our patients seek ASD assessments to provide evidence for reasonable adjustments in educational or workplace settings. Whether for schools, universities, or employers, our detailed diagnostic reports often enable individuals to access the support and accommodations they need, such as adjustments in learning environments, flexible work arrangements, or tailored support plans.

As a new and innovative service, we aim to bridge the gap caused by long NHS waiting times, offering timely assessments that empower individuals to take the next steps in their support journey. While we await our CQC registration, we currently provide assessments only. Any ongoing care plans or treatment will need to be followed up with your GP or another healthcare provider. It is important to note that acceptance of our diagnostic reports, including by your GP, will be at their discretion. However, many institutions and organisations recognise the professional quality and reliability of our reports for securing reasonable adjustments.

We are proud to support our patients in accessing the accommodations that can make a meaningful difference in their lives. While we are not yet commissioned by the NHS, we are working toward this goal. In the meantime, our focus remains on delivering high-quality, compassionate ASD assessments to help individuals and families access the tools and resources they need to thrive.
