ADHD Assessment
process for Children & Young People
Our secure system will send you a series of questionnaires to complete, focusing on your child’s history, strengths, and challenges. Additionally, we will send a separate questionnaire to your child’s educational setting for their class teacher, SENCo, or teaching assistant to complete. These forms are essential for gathering comprehensive information and ensuring a thorough understanding of your child’s needs. While completing them may take some time, they play a crucial role in helping our clinical team review and analyse the information before your child’s assessment, enabling us to provide the most accurate and effective support.
Most of the child or young person's developmental history information will be captured through the online forms we provide for you to complete prior to your appointment. These forms allow us to gather detailed background information efficiently, ensuring we have a solid foundation to work from. During your appointment, this information will be reviewed, discussed in greater depth, and supplemented with any additional details that emerge during our conversation. This process ensures we have a thorough and accurate understanding to support our assessment and recommendations.
Your clinician will arrange a secure online video appointment with you and your child using our integrated secure video platform. You can select a convenient time and date for your session through our online booking system. These appointments typically last around 90 minutes.
Your assessment session consists of two key components:
Developmental History:
The clinician will systematically review your child’s developmental history, including medical, psychiatric, and educational background.
ADHD-Specific Assessment:
In the second part, the clinician will ask you and your child about various aspects of daily life, focusing on ADHD-related characteristics. Additional topics, such as sleep, mental health, and behavior, will also be discussed. During the session, the clinician will observe how your child presents and interacts.
Online Appointments
All our assessments are conducted online through our secure platform, providing several benefits. These include maintaining routines, being in a familiar and comfortable environment, reducing communication demands, and avoiding the need for travel. If accessing the session online presents challenges, we can provide support and guidance to help you prepare.
We understand that some children may find it difficult to engage for the entire session, so regular movement breaks are welcome to ensure comfort and focus. After the assessment sessions, the clinician will determine an appropriate outcome for your child based on all the information and evidence gathered during the assessment, as well as the diagnostic criteria outlined in the DSM-5-TR. In some cases, additional information may be requested from you, your child, or their school/college to assist in formulating a final outcome.
The clinician will then arrange a phone or video feedback appointment with the named contact to discuss the outcome, provide a summary of the overall assessment, and suggest appropriate strategies or interventions that may be beneficial. This feedback appointment will typically last 15-30 minutes. A comprehensive, detailed assessment report will be shared with you within two weeks of this feedback appointment.
At Neuro Wellbeing, we specialise in providing thorough and evidence-based ADHD assessments for children, led by our experienced nurse-led team with access to consultant expertise. Using tools grounded in the DSM-5-TR criteria, we tailor each assessment to meet the unique needs of your child. Many families seek our services to better understand their child’s needs and to provide evidence that can support reasonable adjustments in educational settings, such as additional time for tasks, classroom accommodations, or individualised support plans.
We recognise the challenges families face when navigating long waiting times for NHS assessments. At Neuro Wellbeing, we aim to bridge this gap by offering timely and professional assessments that help children access the support they need sooner. Our detailed diagnostic reports are often used by schools to provide the necessary adjustments that enable children to thrive academically and socially.
As a new and innovative service, we currently provide assessments only while we await our CQC registration. Ongoing care plans or treatment recommendations will need to be followed up with your GP or another healthcare provider, and it is important to note that the acceptance of our diagnostic reports will be at their discretion. However, many schools and institutions recognise the professional quality of our assessments, enabling families to advocate effectively for their child’s needs.
We are proud to support families in helping children reach their full potential. While we are not yet commissioned by the NHS, we are working toward this goal and remain committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate ADHD assessments that empower children and families to move forward with confidence.
